We were able to switch the practice day to Monday, so we will be meeting on the following dates:
January 27, February 3, 10, 24, (not 2/17), March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. For a total of nine practices. Please Note: We will NOT meet Tuesday 1/21.
This fencing club is for students in grades 7-12. It will likely be in club status next school year with the hopes the club will become a Section XI team in 2021-2022 for all three North Fork School Districts including Mattituck, Southold, and Greenport, with MHS hosting.
Participants should wear long comfortable pants (sweatpants) and sneakers. T-shirts are recommended. Water bottles are optional as there is a water fountain nearby. Please no shorts, boots, sandals, nor flip-flops. In case of inclement weather, please bring indoor gym shoes.
Beginner students will learn the basics, safety, rules, and the etiquette of the sport. All three disciplines (weapons: foil, epee, sabre) will be introduced. Experienced fencers will continue to build on their skills and explore more advanced techniques and tactics.
Standard format for practices include a warm-up, stretch routine, footwork, bladework, tactics/technique training and bouting. (Bouting is like sparring where students practice the skills learned.) There will be some days where we do more footwork or more bouting. Video analysis of high level competitions will likely be incorporated into the lessons.
The equipment usage fee is $45 for the nine practices ($5/day) and allows us to maintain, clean, repair, and replace all of our fencing gear including the electrical weapons and scoring machines. Payments can be made by cash or check. (Checks can be made out to East End Fencing Academy, our current club name.) Please bring payments on January 27th, thank you!
After this session, we will decide whether to continue through June. If we do continue until the end of the school year, we will meet on Mondays starting April 13th through June 8th or 15th (not 5/25).
